About EMAAN London

Education is very important in Islam. The Muslim Association of Canada is organizing this program, Educational Muslim Achievement Awards Night (EMAAN), an apex event that honors and recognizes students for their achievements over the past academic year.

EMAAN is a national program with an objective to encourage youth in our community to seek knowledge by furthering their education, to contribute positively to society and to celebrate Muslim student achievements. EMAAN is completely implemented, organized, and executed by the efforts of volunteers, who play a vital role in its success.

EMAAN provides great scholarships to the students who show an excellent achievement record. Academic awards will be offered to all students who will graduate in 2013-2014. Scholarships for post-secondary education and Umrah Tours (in the process) are awarded to select EMAAN students.

Overall, EMAAN is a program that strengthens our Canadian heritage and represents our multicultural Muslim community.

The Muslim Association of Canada is organizing EMAAN, Educational Muslim Achievement Awards Night (EMAAN), to honor and recognize students for their achievements over the past academic year.

The key objective of EMAAN is to encourage youth in our community to seek knowledge by furthering their education, to contribute positively to society and to celebrate Muslim student achievements. Various businesses and families in Windsor also have the opportunity to sponsor the awards.

EMAAN provides many scholarships for high school graduates of up to $2,000, as well as many special recognition awards.

EMAAN 2014 – Awards Description

Post-Secondary UMRAH AWARD:

  • Awarded to two students at the post secondary level
  • All students must compete in an oral recitation of Qur’an Memorization from the last 36 Surahs of the Holy Quran
  • Surah 78 An Nabaa to Surah 114 – An-Nas (The Mankind)
    • All applicants must be available for testing. Date and location are TBA.
    • Applicants will be asked to write on a selected topic at the time of testing
    • Judging criteria shall be based on:
      • Academic achievement
      • Qur’an memorization – last 36 Surahs of the Holy Qur’an
      • Leadership and community service
      • Comprehension of an impromptu essay on a selected topic
      • Students applying for Umrah Awards must complete section B containing the supporting data, letters, evaluations and/or awards of their work within the last one year.
      • *Students must travel within a year of receipt of the award*

Post-Secondary GRADUATION AWARD:

  • For those students graduating from their program as per their institution’s rules and decrees
  • All students must provide a copy of the letter indicating recognition of their graduation by their post-secondary institution

Post-Secondary ACADEMIC AWARDS:

  • Honourable Mention
    • Must obtain average Grade Equivalencies of 3.0 – 3.29
  • Honours 
    • Must obtain average Grade Equivalencies of 3.3 – 3.69. 
  • Honours with Distinction 
    • Must obtain average Grade Equivalencies of 3.7 – 4.0.?
  • Top Academic Student Award
    • One award for the post-seconday student with the highest GPA in the Fall term of the academic year.
  • Quran Memorization Award
    • Awarded to top male and female post-secondaryl student.

PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL AWARDS:

  • Houssein and Nissrine Hammoud College of Pharmacy Scholarship – $2000.00
    • Awarded to a student in Windsor-Essex entering an Accredited College of Pharmacy, a P1 or P2 student
    • Student must scan and submit transcripts, standardized PCAT scores, as well as acceptance letter to the college
    • Must provide proof of Community / extracurricular involvement, and or work history
    • Recipient must also submit a one page essay:
      • Describing the reason you are entering this profession
      • If you are in this profession, describe why you chose the profession and your goals in the future.?

Mohamed and Alia Kadri Science Scholarship – $2000.00

  • $2,000 Awarded to one grade 12 graduate student pursuing studies in a university science program that has displayed a commitment to academic excellence as well as a dedication to community service.
  • All students must submit a copy transcript, university acceptance letter, and community involvement letter from supervisor or time log.
  • Scholarship will be awarded to the most competitive applicant.

Rose City Dental Academic Award – $1,100.00

  • Awarded to one grade 12 student with an average  grade of 80% or higher in ALL subjects
  • Submit proof of community involvement
  • Recipient must also submit a short paragraph, reflecting on community involvement and values they have gained through their experience.
  • All students must submit a copy of their second term report card with the application form

SECONDARY SCHOOL GRADUATION AWARD:

  • Grade 12 Graduation
    • Students graduating from High School will be honoured
    • Students must provide proof of their graduation status from their school

SECONDARY SCHOOL ACADEMIC AWARDS:

  • Honours 
    • Average mark of 80-89.4% in All subjects
    • All students must  submit a copy of their second term report card with the application form.?
  • Honours with Distinction
    • Average mark of 90% and over in ALL subjects
    • All students must submit a copy of their second term report card with the application form.
  • Most Improved Student
    • Awarded to students who do NOT meet Honours criteria
    • Awarded to all students who have obtained overall improvement in ALL subjects from term one to term two
    • All students must submit a copy of their second term report card with the application form.
  • Top Academic Student Award
    • One award for each of the following grades: 9 and grades 10, 11
    • Awarded to students who obtained the highest average in ALL subjects during the current academic year
    • The Top Academic Student recipient for grade 12 will receive a $1,000 scholarship upon proof of enrollment in a full time program at a Post Secondary institution
    • **In the case where judges award more than one applicant, recipients will SHARE this $1,000 scholarship**
  • Quran Memorization Award
    • Awarded to top male and female high school student.
    • All applicants must be available for testing. Date and location are TBA.
    • Judging criteria shall be based on:

    • Awarded to a student who has obtained the highest average

SECONDARY & POST-SECONDARY SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS

Community Service and Youth Leadership Award

  • Awarded to one male and one female High School student
  • All students must complete the “Special Recognition Awards” section of the application
  • Judging criteria shall be based on:
    • number and type of activity involvement
    • level of involvement and impact of involvement
    • team leadership and service to community
    • SUBMIT LETTER FROM ORGANIZATION

Athlete of the Year Award

  • All students must complete Section-B of the application
  • Awarded to top male and female  high school athlete
  • Judging criteria shall be based on:
    • number of sports and level of involvement
    • achievement and recognition
    • sportsmanship and leadership. 

Literature/Journalism Award

  • Awarded to one high school and one post-secondary student
  • All students must include a copy of their second term report card, and complete the “Special Recognition Awards” section of the application
  • Judging criteria shall be based on:
    • innovativeness and creativity
    • value or benefit to society
    • published piece with supporting letters, evaluations, and/or awards.

Arts  Award

  • All students must complete Section-B of the application
  • Judging criteria shall be based on:
    • innovativeness and creativity
    • artistic talents
    • value or benefit to society
    • supporting data, letters, evaluations and/or awards

 Science Award

  • All students must include a copy of their second term report card, and complete the “Special Recognition Awards” section of the application
  • Judging criteria shall be based on:
    • innovativeness
    • efficient and effective methods
    • value or benefit to society
    • supporting data, letters, evaluations and/or awards 

Video Award

  • All students must submit a video submission based on the following theme:
    • MUSLIM YOUTH – Contributing Positively to Society
  • The top two videos will be played during the awards ceremony
  • All students must complete Section-B of the application
  • Judging criteria shall be based on:
    • innovativeness and creativity
    • value or benefit to society

Quran Awards (High School, Post Secondary and Young Professional)

Quran Awards (Beginner ­ $150; Intermediate ­ $250; Advanced ­ $350)

Three awards will be presented in this category: one each at the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. These awards are open for all levels; no level is required to apply for a specific award. Applicants will be assessed for proper recitation, tarteel and tajweed of the following chapters and/or verses of the Quran:

Beginner level: Surat Muhammad

Intermediate level: First Juz’ of Surat Al­Baqarah

Advanced level: Surat Al­Baqarah in its entirety

 

Academic Awards (High School and Post Secondary only)

Academic Awards

Top Scholar Awards (2 x $1000)

The Top Scholar Award is presented to one high school student in their final year (i.e. Grade 12) of high school, and one post secondary student who are the top Muslim students in London, excelling in both curricular and extracurricular activities.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Awards (2 x $500)

The STEM Award is presented to a hard­working and dedicated student who has excelled in any of the science subjects (excluding health and medical sciences). Two awards will be presented this year, one each at the high school and post­secondary levels. Excelling criteria include coming up with an invention, a scientific idea, or practical application; or participation in a major fair, project, or competition.

Health Science Award ($500)

The Health Science Award is presented to a post­secondary student who has demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in a health­ related field. The ideal candidate will have excelled in the health or medical sciences fields through his/her academic achievement and involvement in community health initiatives.

Post­Secondary First­Year Academic Excellence Award ($500)

The Post­Secondary First­Year Academic Excellence Award will be presented to a post-secondary student who has completed the first year of their program (2015­2016) and achieved an overall average of 90% or higher.

Academic Excellence Recognition Award

The Excellence Award recognizes all high school and post­secondary students who apply to this award and have achieved an overall average of 90% or higher in all years of high school or post­secondary education.

Academic Distinction Recognition Award

The Distinction Award recognizes all high school and post­secondary students who apply to this award and have achieved an overall average of 85% or higher in all years of high school or post­secondary education.

Academic Honours Recognition Award

The Honours Award recognizes all high school students who apply to this award that have achieved an overall average of 80% or higher in all years of high school.

Most Improved Academic Recognition Award

The Most Improved Academic Award recognizes one high school student and one post-
secondary student who have shown the most academic improvement when comparing this year’s final marks with those of last year’s marks in all or most subjects.

Community Awards

Best High School MSA Recognition Award

The Best High School MSA Award recognizes the MSA that has served its school community to the best of its abilities and resources. The ideal MSA will have shown progress in the improvement of student life in their school, collaborated with other clubs, and made a positive impact on their school and/or the greater Muslim community.

Community Service Award (High school ­ $500; Post­secondary ­ $500; Professional ­ Recognition only)

The Community Service Award is presented to one high school student, one post­secondary student, and one professional who has volunteered their time to the service of the Muslim and larger London community through involvement in one or more organizations on a long-­term basis.

Humanitarian Service Award (Post­secondary ­ $250; Professional ­ Recognition only)

The Humanitarian Service Award recognizes one post­secondary student and one professional who has made significant contributions to a humanitarian cause either in Canada or abroad.

Best Muslim­Owned Business Award (Professional ­ Recognition only)

The Best Muslim ­Owned Business Award recognizes a Muslim ­owned business that has provided outstanding services and shown commitment to the Muslim and/or larger London community. This award is open to all businesses regardless of the business owners’ ages.

Leadership Awards (High School, Post Secondary and Young Professional)

Leadership Award (High school ­ $500; Post­secondary ­ $500)

The Leadership Award is presented to one high school student and one post­secondary student who, through the spearheading of a volunteer ­based initiative or acceptance of a leadership role in a non­profit organization or club at their university or college, has demonstrated several characteristics of exceptional leadership.

Business Award (High school ­ $500; Post­secondary ­ $500)

The Business Award is presented to a single individual or a group who have either written a feasible business plan that is backed by a relevant reference, or successfully initiated a profitable business. Two awards will be presented: one at the high school level and one at the post­secondary level.

Professional Career Advancement Award (Recognition only)

The Career Advancement Award recognizes a professional who has shown advancement in his/her career by earning higher degrees (e.g. Master’s, PhDs, MBAs, etc.) and/or has obtained exceptional achievements by receiving national or international awards.

Professional Entrepreneurship Award (Recognition only)

The Professional Entrepreneurship Award recognizes a single individual or group of professionals who have successfully initiated a profitable business.

Self ­Expression and Self­ Development Awards (All Levels)

Arts Awards

1) Digital Arts Award ($250)

  • The Digital Arts award is presented to an artist who has demonstrated exceptional talent using one or several digital art forms. This may include (but is not limited to) graphic design, 2D/3D animation, photography or film. The applicant will demonstrate their talent by submitting an original piece of artwork of their own design and execution, according to a specific theme (see application form for details).

2) Fine Arts Award ($250)

  • The Fine Arts award is presented to an artist who has demonstrated exceptional talent in the field of fine arts. This may include (but is not limited to) painting, drawing, sculpture, or crafts. The applicant will demonstrate their talent by submitting an original piece of artwork of their own design and execution, according to a specific theme (see application form for details).

Athlete of the Year Awards (High school ­ 2 x $250; Post­secondary ­ 2 x $250)

Four awards will be presented in this category: two at the high school level (one female, one male) and two at the post­secondary level (one female, one male). Successful applicants will be those who demonstrate excellent athletic abilities in a sport of their choice, and embody the characteristics essential for excellence in athletics.

Creative Writing Awards (High school ­ $250; Post­secondary ­ $250; Professional ­ Recognition only)

Three awards will be presented in this category: one at the high school level, one at the post-secondary level and one at the professional level. Successful applicants will be those who demonstrate clear talent in the field of creative writing through any print or digital means (e.g.newspaper articles, blog posts, poems, essays, short stories, spoken word, etc…). Applicants will be required to submit a piece of work of their original creation, according to a specific theme (see application form for details).
